Character vs. Character |
Example #1 Saruman vs. the Fellowship
Saruman knows that the fellowship is travelling through the Redhorn Pass in the Caradhras Mountains, so he casts a spell to destroy the mountain and bring it down onto the fellowship. Already having trouble getting through the snowy mountain pass, Legolas notices a voice in the air. Gandalf exclaims "It's Saruman!" and he is correct. The grey wizard Gandalf tries to counter Sarumans spell, but Saruman succeeds in bringing a heavy chunk of snow onto the fellowhip. The fellowship is able to dig through the snow and escape unharmed by Saruman the white. Example #2 Boromir vs. Frodo At Amon Hen, Boromir comes to Frodo while the rest of the group isn't around. Boromir insists Frodo lend him the ring but Frodo resists. Boromir even tries to tackle Frodo to steal the ring, but Frodo slips it on and becomes invisible. Boromir cannot see Frodo now, so he escapes. |
Character vs. Nature |
Example #1 Snow and extreme cold vs. the Fellowship
Before Saruman makes matters worse for the fellowship, they have to deal the freezing cold and several foot deep snow of the Redhorn Pass. The hobbits are completely worn out, Gimli, Aragorn and Boromir help the hobbits while Legolas stands atop the snow, not falling in. Legolas is not bothered by the freezing cold while the other eight of the fellowship have trouble. Example #2 Crebain vs. the Fellowship A swarm of Crebain spies (dark hawk-like birds of saruman) fly over the fellowship making them take cover not to be seen. It may be one of the Crebain that informs Sarumon that the fellowship was crossing The Redhorn Pass. These birds definately pose a threat to the fellowship and are hard to kill because they fly quickly. |
Character vs. Technology |
Example #1 Frodo vs. the Ring
Frodo has to be sure not to let the ring's power rule over him. If Frodo didn't possess such strong resistance to the ring, he would have handed it to the black riders and insured the doom of all peace in Middle Earth. Whenever Frodo puts on the ring he turns invisible and alerts the Black Riders of his location. Having constant influential power over Frodo, the ring must be rid forever which will be hard for Frodo with the ring becoming more valuable and irresistible to him every step of the way. Example #2 Morgul Blade vs. Frodo When Frodo refuses to give the ring to the ring wraith at Weathertop, he is stabbed by one of the black riders. Unless Frodo can be healed quickly, he will turn into a wraith. Frodo was stabbed with a Morgul dagger. This dagger is unlike most, for it is poisoned and disintegrates so that a portion of the blade remains in the victim. This deadly piece of technology stabbed Frodo in the shoulder, so he didn't die immediately although it setback the plan. |
Character vs. Society |
Example #1 Fellowship vs. Orcs
In the abandoned mines of Moria, the Fellowship is not alone. When the dwarves fled the mines, a new creature took residence. these creatures are known as orcs. The fellowship gets caught by the orcs and soon were pursued by them throughout the mine. At the end, numerous orcs had been slain and a cave troll nearly killed Frodo (hadn't it been for his Mithril armor) but all of the fellowship survived, until a bigger threat was uncovered. Example #2 Frodo vs. Council Frodo surprised himself and the other members of the council when he decided to be the one who'd carry the ring to Mordor. This was disagreed upomn upon by some but Elrond finally said that Frodo would be the one to carry the ring. Members of the council thought of all beings, why a hobbit? Gandalf knew Frodo had the courage and responsibility needed to keep the ring secret and safe. |
Character vs. Self |
Example #1 Frodo vs. Himself
Frodo, being a hobbit, wondered why he should do such a mighty task of keeping the One Ring. Frodo, like most others, would think himself unfit for such a job and impossible for a hobbit to accomplish. Gandalf saw purpose for giving the ring to Frodo, so he did. Example #2 Gollum vs. Himself Gollum was once a normal man named Smeagol until he found a golden object at the bottom of a river. This golden object turned out to be the One Ring and Smeagol quickly became obsessive of it , even killing his friend, Deagol, over it. Gollum has lived over 500 years in torment, pain and suffering because of the ring's possessive powers. Possessed Gollum sometimes fights with Smeagol (in his mind) and it appears the "smeagol' side of Gollum is under control of possessed Gollum. |
